The Sin of Omission

Galatians 6:9 And let us not grow weary while doing good, for in due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart.

The sin of omission is a common sin. The temptation is to look the other way, to witness something and say nothing. Jesus provides an example of the Good Samaritan in Scripture as a parable. Now the parable is not only showing this sin of omission, but the Good Samaritan is actually Jesus Himself who never sinned this way.

We are all guilty of this sin in some way. It is also called the sin of presumption, but I like it defined as omission. It is the failure to act upon something we know we should be doing or failure to condemn a sin we know is a sin. We do this for various reasons. One is to be accepted, another is the emotional sinful appeals to keep your mouth shut, another could be the old “don’t you judge me”. So we do nothing, we say nothing. The appeal might be to “God is love, so please stop”, and so we say nothing, do nothing while the sins happen right before your eyes.

The sin of omission is also present if we falsely presume that we are as holy as God is holy. Some subjectively believe they are sinless and holy, but fail the objective test against an eternal holy God every single day. “No one is perfect”, but God certainly is!

It is quite prevalent in the Gospel sharing world as well. One might see a definite big problem with a gospel one is sharing which is anti-Scriptural, yet they ignore this because the sharer might have said some truths. As James 2 explains “even the demons God is one”, it doesn’t mean they are right in their walk!

We must always fight against the sin of omission, it is a natural sin to commit. You must not rationalize if you commit this sin, it must be confessed to God so as you grow out of this sin. I believe God tests us in this respect, a Christian being sanctified will sometimes be placed in situations so as to test your sanctification. Those who are being sanctified, will realize and be convicted of this, and will grow and mature from it, they repent. Those who aren’t continue to look the other way, they rationalize, point fingers, and try to justify these sins in their own eyes, but it won’t get past God’s ever watching eyes.

Be on guard for this sin of omission. Don’t fret, we all fall short of the glory of God, but those IN Christ will repent of it, grow from it. It is all part of the process as no one is glorified in the flesh.

Romans 7:21 I find then a law, that evil is present with me, the one who wills to do good. 22 For I delight in the law of God according to the inward man. 23 But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members. 24 O wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death? 25 I thank God—through Jesus Christ our Lord!
